ATTN STOW RESIDENTS!  The Stow Friends of the Council on Aging (SFCOA) is looking for a volunteer to help them with publicity.  This would involve using Canva to create flyers for various events and other materials (such as updating their brochure.)   It would also involve creating a word document for inclusion in the Stow COA monthly newsletter, the Stow Senior Scoop. • Traditional 401(k) plans offer maximum flexibility by allowing both employee salary deferrals and employer contributions that can be adjusted based on business performance. These plans have added costs and administrative responsibilities.
• Safe harbor 401(k) plans are ideal if you want to maximize your own retirement contributions without complex testing requirements and you’re willing to make required employer contributions.
• A cash balance plan is often paired with another plan type, such as a 401(k), to allow greater retirement savings. It works well when you have a smaller company with high-earning employees and consistent cash flow, and you’re comfortable making required contributions.

Each plan type involves different eligibility requirements, establishment deadlines, contribution limits, complexity and costs. In determining a workplace retirement plan that's right for your business, you'll want to consider your number of employees, desired contribution levels, comfort with required employer contributions and willingness to handle administrative responsibilities. And, of course, the goals for your business and your own retirement are important criteria.

After 30 years of dedicated service to the children, families, and communities of MetroWest, Chris Duane, President of Boys & Girls Clubs of MetroWest, will retire following an extraordinary career devoted to creating opportunities and changing lives.

On Saturday, September 12, 2026 from 9 – 1, Memorial Congregational Church is hosting its Fall electronics recycling and document shredding event.

The event is open to all communities and will be held rain or shine.  At the electronics recycling truck, prices vary from $25-50 for a TV, $15 for a laptop computer, $15-25 for a computer monitor, $5-$40 for appliances, and $5 for a box of electric cords.  Workers will remove the items from your vehicle and place them in the recycling truck which is operated by a state-licensed electronic recycling company who will properly dispose of all items. They will accept ANYTHING WITH A CORD OR BATTERY (including washing machines, air conditioners, space heaters, treadmills, etc.) as well as propane tanks, any type of battery, printer ink cartridges, and toner cartridges.

The fee for shredding is just $9 per copy paper box or brown grocery bag.  A volunteer will remove your boxes or bags of documents from your car and your documents will be shredded on-site.  The truck is equipped with closed-circuit TV so you can actually watch the shredding if you wish. Personal and business documents of any type may be shredded.

BOSTON, July 27, 2026 — For only the second time in history, the American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis — and patients may already be feeling the impact. Donors are asked to act immediately to help save lives.
Blood donations have fallen to a four-year summer low, worsening this season’s emergency blood shortage. All blood types are needed, but the situation is especially dire for type O blood as the Red Cross is now limiting distributions of these blood products to hospitals. The supply of type O positive blood has now dropped below a one-day supply.

Patients can’t wait
Despite thousands of people who have stepped up to help end the emergency blood shortage since it was declared earlier this month, donations are still not keeping pace with hospital demand, and the situation has escalated. Extreme heat, poor air quality and widespread foodborne illnesses continue to contribute to lower donor turnout this summer.
“This summer has brought a number of unique challenges that have placed additional strain on our blood supply, creating growing concerns for hospitals and the patients who rely on lifesaving transfusions,” said Paul Sullivan, senior vice president of donor services for the Red Cross. “If just three more donors gave at each blood drive this summer, we could help the blood supply rebound and ensure hospitals have the blood products they need throughout the remainder of the season.”

Concord and Maynard, MA (July 15, 2026) – Open Table, the MetroWest charity dedicated to fighting hunger and building healthy communities, today announced that it has appointed three new members – Mimi Gleason, Eric Schoen, and Greg Wolf -- as well as a returning member, Norma Frye, to its Board of Directors. With their diverse skills, each of the new BOD directors will help Open Table to meet its mission of ending hunger in our local community by providing healthy food in ways that respect the dignity and diversity of those served.
“Each of the new board members brings unique talents that will help Open Table deal with its current challenges and opportunities,” said Barbara Fisher, chair, Open Table Board of Directors. “As we look forward to a new fiscal year where 40% of Massachusetts households are facing food insecurity, their input will be invaluable in guiding our strategic and tactical decisions for the year ahead.”
New Board Members: The four new Open Table board members bring a variety of skills – from financial expertise to corporate marketing, IT operations, and education – to the Open Table board of directors.
Norma Frye is a retired high tech marketing and communications professional who spent most of her career at Digital/Compaq/Hewlett Packard. Her positions included building and managing a satellite broadcast television network, and developing and delivering a world-wide employee engagement program following the DEC-Compaq merger. Post-retirement, she became involved with Open Table cooking SOS meals and joined the communications team in order to learn more about the organization and its mission. Quickly hooked, she agreed to co-chair the 30th anniversary Chopped for Charity event.
Norma’s voluntarism has included leadership roles in the Girl Scouts, church youth groups, fundraising for the Sudbury middle school and chaperoning a mission trip to Honduras. She and her husband Bob (another Open Table volunteer) raised their son and daughter in Sudbury where they continue to reside. Norma also spends time doting on their 4 grandchildren, working in her son’s web development business, playing tennis, gardening.
Mimi Gleason is a retired middle school teacher who taught for 31 years in local public and private schools. Mimi developed curriculum, supervised student teachers, and focused on creating community in the classroom and school through social emotional curriculum.
Mimi feels strongly about helping Open Table drive its mission of ending food insecurity and furthering its respectful approach to addressing clients with dignity. Mimi volunteers twice a week distributing food. She has been involved with Chopped for Charity and the Ride for Food. She is also on the board of ThinkGive, a nonprofit that creates social emotional programs focused on kindness for K-8 students across the country.
Mimi holds an Ed.M. from Harvard, and a B.A. from Middlebury College. She can often be found swimming, road biking, skiing, playing pickleball, and reading. She lives with her husband and son in Acton.
Eric M. Schoen is a retired financial services executive who worked at Fidelity Investments for 35 years. He held a number of senior leadership roles in Fidelity’s Retail and Institutional business units with responsibility for Risk Management, Investment Advisory Oversight, Operations, Client Services, Project Management and Sales functions. Following his retirement from Fidelity, Eric has committed to help address food insecurity. He is the Chairman of the Board of Advisors and a member of the Board of Directors for the Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) and is a member of the Audit, Strategic Planning and Compensation Committees with GBFB.
Eric began volunteering at Open Table in 2022 and enjoys his role as an active weekly Pick and Pack volunteer, helping to further Open Table's mission of ensuring no one in our service area goes hungry. In their spare time, Eric and his wife, Cathy, enjoy spending time with their adult children, travelling and hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Eric and Cathy live in Concord.
Greg Wolf is a retired IT professional with 38 years’ experience serving organizations across various industries. Greg held key leadership roles in Massachusetts organizations such as Athenahealth, PTC, Novartis and most recently as CIO of UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester. Greg loves supporting our community in various ways, including having served on the board for the UMass Cancer Walk. Greg has a BS in Engineering from Cornell University.
Greg and his wife, Karen, have lived in Sudbury the last 30 years. Their two adult children have moved out and live in the Boston area, but their dog and cat still live with them in Sudbury. Greg enjoys boating, hiking, traveling and enjoying the company of good friends.

How the Treasurer’s Office is finding new ways to connect unclaimed funds with its rightful owners

BOSTON — Massachusetts State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg’s Unclaimed Property Division (UCP) has been making its mark on returns this year. Since January, the division has held over 20 outreach visits at senior centers across the state to reunite forgotten property with its rightful owners.

“Too many people do not realize they have money waiting for them,” said Treasurer Goldberg. “By visiting these centers, we are making it easier for seniors to search for and claim what is theirs.”
Over $385,000 in property has been returned to seniors during these visits, including $72,359.16 in Quincy, $57,357.88 in Hingham, and $55,758.16 in Wellesley. Upcoming visits are scheduled for Sharon and North Attleboro on Monday, July 20th, with additional stops planned for later this summer and fall:

* Weymouth (7/21/26)
* Quincy (8/4/26)
* Fitchburg (8/21/26)
* Framingham (10/16/26)

UCP holds forgotten checking and savings accounts, uncashed checks, stocks and dividends, and more. Accounts are generally considered abandoned and turned over to the state after three years of inactivity.

Massachusetts residents do not need to wait for a senior center visit to check if they are owed money. Treasurer Goldberg urges everyone to search for unclaimed property for free at www.findmassmoney.gov or call the Unclaimed Property Division’s live call center at 1-888-344-MASS (6277).

Stow Girl Scout Caterina Romano will host a community mural painting event on Saturday, July 18, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Hartley Road in Stow. Community members of all ages are invited to help paint a permanent mural celebrating Stow's history, landmarks, and unique identity. No artistic experience is necessary—the mural's paint-by-number design is created so everyone can participate! Parking will be available behind Center School for this free, drop-in event. Whether you stop by for 15 minutes or stay for the afternoon, everyone is welcome to come leave their mark!

The mural, titled Our Town, Our Story, is Caterina's Girl Scout Gold Award Project. This is the highest award in Girl Scouting, requiring Girl Scouts to identify a community need and lead a sustainable project that creates a lasting impact. The project is supported in part by a grant from the Stow Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

A Friend in Need (AFIN) is a small, all-volunteer organization that provides one-time financial assistance to people in need in Acton/Boxborough and Maynard. May and June have been especially busy, with more requests for assistance than usual.
An individual who had been out of work but had found a new job was having difficulty catching up on bills that had gone unpaid during unemployment. AFIN paid the electric bill to prevent the power from being shut off.
An individual who had been unable to work while a child was hospitalized needed rental assistance despite working two part-time jobs. AFIN contributed to the rent.
Another person needed help with utility bills. Although they had previously been able to cover them, rising costs of goods and living expenses had made it impossible. AFIN paid the electric bill.
After undergoing surgery and dealing with additional health complications, another individual had fallen behind on rent. AFIN was able to catch up on the rent payments.
Usually, there is a one-time limit on assistance for any family, but due to the economy, AFIN is trying to be a bit more flexible. Their mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of their funding comes from pleas published in our local newspapers and from generous community residents, and they can usually provide between $300 and $600 to a needy family, depending on available resources.
Their volunteers cover postage and other costs, so they can give away 100% of the money they receive.

AFIN will consider helping anyone recommended by clergy or social professionals affiliated with a local agency. Anyone in urgent need can be considered for financial assistance by contacting a member of the clergy or a social service representative and asking them to contact A Friend in Need on their behalf. A Friend in Need does not discriminate and will try to help anyone with a genuine need. All donations, no matter how small, can make a real difference to someone in need.

The Maynard Cultural Council (MCC) will host its 2026 Grantee Award Ceremony on Tuesday August 11, 2026 at 7pm. The ceremony will be held at the Maynard Public Library Roosevelt Room, 77 Main Street, Maynard, MA.

The MCC is proud and excited to be presenting the winners of the 2026 grants. There are sixteen grants being announced.

Additionally, the Second Annual Erik Hansen Award will be announced. The award is named in honor of the late artist and photographer Erik Hansen who was a passionate and committed advocate for the arts in Maynard. The honoree is chosen for their outstanding contribution to the town’s arts and cultural community.

All are welcome.

The annual grant cycle typically opens in September and will be announced. If you are an individual, organization, school, nonprofits and seek funding for your cultural activity in the area you are welcome to apply for the 2027 grant program.

The Maynard Cultural Council is a volunteer organization that supports art, science, and humanities projects by granting funds allocated to Maynard by the Commonwealth.

The Maynard Food Pantry is in need of a volunteer for a specific pick up every four weeks.

We are in need of a volunteer to pick up bread and pastries at Sudbury Farms, Sudbury Crossing/Rte 20 once every fourth Sunday (alternating with three other volunteers), bringing the product back to the Maynard Food Pantry.  The volunteer must be able to be at Sudbury Farms at 8 AM (when they open).

Do you remember where you were on July 17, 2006? Were you one of the many people who celebrated that unforgettable day? Were you there with Mr. Mark, the great kazoo maestro?

After years of planning and renovations, the Town of Maynard opened the doors to a new library in the former Roosevelt Elementary School (1918-1988) on Nason Street.

Before the doors officially opened, hundreds of residents paraded from the old library in the town hall to the new building, kazoos in hand. It was a joyful celebration of what a community can accomplish when library trustees, staff, the building committee, Friends of the Maynard Public Library, volunteers, town officials, and residents work together. An empty school building was transformed into the vibrant heart of the community.

Now, nearly 20 years later, it’s time to celebrate again!

Join us  on Saturday, July 18, from 10:15 am to 2:00 pm, for the Library’s  birthday celebration on Nason Street. 

• Join the kazoo parade around the building, led by the spirited Mr. Mark
• Hear current and former Library leaders talk about the Library’s  journey
• Celebrate  the winners and honorable mentions in the bookmark design competition, and grab a copy of the winning entries.

Come join the fun! On Sunday, August 9, 2026 the Stow Conservation Trust will run its annual Bike for the Woods charity bike ride event!

There are rides for all ages and ability levels and all are scenic and well marked! Rides range from 5 (particularly good for families with small children) and 14 miles to 25 and 37 miles, which are a little hillier and more appropriate for experienced, adult riders. Want a challenge? There’s a fun, hilly “metric century” of 64 miles! All routes have GPS files available through our website, bikeforthewoods.org, that you can download to your phone or bike computer, and all except the southern half of the 64 mile route are “arrowed” (that means there are painted, directional arrows on the pavement). A limited supply of old fashioned cue sheets are available for the longer rides.

All rides pass by conservation land in Stow and surrounding towns and avoid busy streets. The longer routes (25 and up) pass through Stow, Harvard, Littleton, and Acton, and the 64 mile route adds mileage in Hudson, Bolton and Marlborough. Refreshments are provided at a water stop that you will pass at mile 13 and again (on the 37 and 64) at mile 24.

The Walk 'n Mass Volkssport Club invites you to participate in the Boston—Castle Island walk route on Friday, August 28, and/or Saturday, August 29, 2026. This is a walk-at-your-own pace, just-for-fun event “in your own backyard.” The Castle Island route (choice of 6km or 11km) is specifically designed for these two days as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the club's parent organization, AVA: America's Walking Club.

The start point is the meeting room adjacent to the lobby in the Courtyard by Marriott – South Boston, 63R Boston Street, Boston MA 02125. Start anytime between 9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. and finish by 3:00 p.m.  A specially designed magnet will be given to all registered participants at this special walk event.

The 6km and 11km Castle Island walk routes start and end at the Courtyard Marriott. If you prefer to walk with a group rather than following the written directions to walk on your own, meet in the registration room at 9:30 a.m. on either Aug. 28 or 29. There are two route options for the 6km distance: one goes through Moakley Park and along the water but does not go as far as Castle Island; the other goes to Castle Island and participants take a bus to return to the Courtyard Marriott.

Atlanta, Ga. (Grassroots Newswire) June 29, 2026 - Career and technical education students were recognized with a certificate of accomplishment at the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference (NLSC) held June 1-5 in Atlanta. An all-time high of 7,000 students competed in the 2026 SkillsUSA Championships at NLSC, which is the largest gathering of the future skilled workforce.

As an indicator of proficiency, Skill Point Certificates were awarded to SkillsUSA Championships competitors who met a predetermined threshold score for their respective competition. Students can add this certificate, an indicator of career readiness, to their employment portfolio.

* From Massachusetts: Maya Burke, from Maynard and a student at Assabet Valley Regional Tech High School (Marlborough), was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in Commercial Roofing.

To be invited to the SkillsUSA Championships, students first had to win their state-level competition, demonstrating their technical skills, workplace skills and personal skills. The national competition featured state champions from middle school, high school and college/postsecondary divisions across the country in 115 hands-on career and leadership competitions including robotics, automotive technology, drafting, criminal justice, aviation maintenance, public speaking and more.

"This showcase of career and technical education demonstrates SkillsUSA at its finest," said SkillsUSA Executive Director Chelle Travis. "Our students, instructors and industry partners work together to ensure that every student excels."

The SkillsUSA Championships is the largest skill competition in the world and covers 1.79 million square feet, equivalent to 31 football fields or 41 acres. It's supported by leaders from 850 businesses, corporations, trade associations and unions who planned and evaluated the competitors against their industry standards. More than 2,000 industry judges and technical committee members also volunteered their time to ensure a successful event.

Illumination Station VBS will be Held at Trinity Church Congregational in Bolton from August 3 - 7, from 9AM - 12PM. Bugles Across America will hold its 251st consecutive monthly ceremony on Sunday, July 5 at 5:00 PM at the Acton Center Fire Station flagpole, next to the Acton War Memorial. This special Independence Day observance will include the Pledge of Allegiance, a participatory round-robin reading of the Declaration of Independence (all attendees are warmly invited to join), live “Taps” performed by local buglers, and an illuminated moment of silence.

Stow Girl Scout Caterina Romano will host a community mural painting event on Saturday, July 18, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Hartley Road in Stow. Community members of all ages are invited to help paint a permanent mural celebrating Stow's history, landmarks, and unique identity. No artistic experience is necessary—the mural's paint-by-number design is created so everyone can participate! Parking will be available behind Center School for this free, drop-in event. Whether you stop by for 15 minutes or stay for the afternoon, everyone is welcome to come leave their mark!

The mural, titled Our Town, Our Story, is Caterina's Girl Scout Gold Award Project. This is the highest award in Girl Scouting, requiring Girl Scouts to identify a community need and lead a sustainable project that creates a lasting impact. The project is supported in part by a grant from the Stow Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
