Sandwich’s Renaissance Man: The Art And Crafts Of Alvin A. White

An exciting new exhibit currently on display at the Green Briar Nature Center in East Sandwich features the many talents of the late Alvin A. White of Sandwich, who was truly a Renaissance Man. He was a gunsmith, scrimshander, jeweler, model maker, bird carver, sculptor and painter. White’s primary fame was due to his talent as a gun engraver. He became unquestionably the most famous and accomplished American arms engraver of the 20th Century. Acknowledged as the Colt Arms Company’s Master Engraver, he was on exclusive call to engrave their most important presentation guns including four U.S. presidents and numerous other dignitaries. Although Alvin White’s fame was due to his talent as a gun engraver, this exhibit primarily pays tribute to his many other talents, especially his work with scrimshaw, sculpture, jewelry making, bird carving, cup plate design and painting.
White and his wife, Violet, were true friends of the Thornton W. Burgess Society. His love of nature was reflected in the many commemorative cup plates he designed for the Society. During his semi-retirement in Sandwich, the creation of cup plate moulds had become one of his primary occupations by the 1970’s. The Burgess Society cup plates were among White’s personal favorites. He had read Burgess stories as a boy and admired Harrison Cady, the primary illustrator of Burgess books. White once remarked, “The Burgess character drawings have always appealed to me.”
The recently renovated gallery space at the nature center was funded in part by grants from The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and Mirant LLC. The White exhibit will run through Aug., 3rd. Hours are Mon., through Sat., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sun., from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is by donation. Green Briar is located at 6 Discovery Hill Road, just off Route 6A in East Sandwich.
