Emily Clines is Pan- Massachusetts Challenge Pedal Partner
Emily Clines, 15, of Plymo
-uth, has been named a Pedal Partner of the 29th annual Pan - Massachusetts Challenge.
As a PMC Pedal Partner, Emily will inspire more than 5,500 cyclists to ride up to 190 miles across Massachusetts and raise more than $34 million for adult and pediatric cancer care and research through Dana- Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund.
Emily, Diagnosed with Brain Cancer in June of 2007, is being treated at Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s pediatric oncology center, the Jimmy Fund Clinic. The Pedal Partner Program matches Jimmy Fund Clinic Patients with PMC cyclists who will ride in their honor.
For the children, being a designated PMC Pedal Partner offers an exciting distraction from their treatments, while introducing them to new friends. They also become a part of a large group committed to fighting the disease for which they are being treated. PMC cyclists offer companionship and support to the children and their families.
“Pedal Partners are an inspiration for PMC riders to train for the event and to raise money for cancer research,” says Billy Starr, PMC founder and executive director.
During PMC weekend, photographs of the Pedal Partners line the seven bike routes, motivating riders to keep cycling. On Sat., Aug., 2, many Pedal Partners will meet their cycling teams at the Lakeville water stop along the PMC route. The break gives Pedal Partners the opportunity to hear stories from the road, and connect with their teams, reminding the cyclists what, and for whom, they are riding.
The Jimmy Fund supports the fight against cancer at Dana- Farber Cancer Institute, a World - renowned pioneer in discovering and developing innovative, effective cancer therapies for adults and children. The Jimmy Fund’s supporters enable Dana- Farber’s physicians and researchers to do the work necessary to raise the chances of survival or cancer patients around the world. progress is continually being made thanks to research funding raised by PMC cyclists.
