CHAMP Homes Presents Alice O’Neill Humanitarian Awards

Paul Hebert of CHAMP Homes distributed the Alice O’Neill Humanitarian Awards earlier this month. These awards are given out annually in June by CHAMP Homes as a program of Housing For All Corporation in recognition of those individuals, groups and organizations that have contributed to the good of our communities.
Ms. Alice O’Neill was the first major benefactor of the Housing For All Corporation, who set the standard of unselfish caring and support for individuals and families within our communities without regard for their faith, race, skin color, country of origin, sexual orientation, economic status and to treat all people as children of God. All programs developed by the Housing For All Corporation are to be founded in faith and with the mission of reducing suffering and celebrating the joy of the oneness of all.
This year the Award was given to 40 students of the Horace Mann School , six awards went to Grade Eight students at the Barnstable Middle School . A special award went to the students, Community Volunteer Coordinator and BHS School Food Service for their participation in the “Save the Food” program along with an Award to Reverend Bruce Smith and Mrs. Caroline Smith for the Calvary Baptist Church “Food Pantry Kitchen”. Special acts of kindness go a long way in bringing communities together and recognizing good works encourages us all.
Since its founding just 17 years ago, CHAMP Homes, a program of Housing For All Corp., has served over 1,300 Cape Cod residents with supportive and affordable housing. They in turn have provided countless hours of service to the communities and added to the growth of our economy.

Motorcycle Escorts Wanted for the Last Gasp Bike, Boat, ‘n Bake on Sept., 14

The eighteenth annual Last Gasp Bike, Boat, ‘n Bake will take place this coming Sept., 14, 2008. The Last Gasp is a three part, day long, fundraising extravaganza intended to help raise money for several diversified nonprofit organizations, including CHAMP Homes, headquartered on Cape Cod and the Islands . CHAMP Homes’ executive director, Paul Hebert, is looking to recruit local motorcycle clubs or individual motorcyclists as escorts and fundraising supporters for the Last Gasp.
These motorcycle escorts will be asked to enter the Last Gasp event and lead the pedal cyclists out of Sandwich and onward along Route 6A to Provincetown . These special road warriors will provide security at intersections and moral support for the pedal bikers, while raising funds to support the residents, especially Veterans, living at CHAMP Homes.
The day consists of a 62 mile bike ride from Sandwich to Provincetown , a Cape Cod Bay cruise following the ride, and an authentic Cape Cod clambake to end the day. Those who are not interested in participating in the bike ride but would still like to support The Last Gasp bikers can ride the Last Gasp party bus.
There is a $75 registration fee and $300 minimum funds raised for those wishing to participate in the Last Gasp bike race. The fee includes beverages and snacks along the route, lunch at the Surf Club in Provincetown , Cape Cod Bay Cruise back to Sandwich , Authentic Cape Cod Clambake, a commemorative 2008 Last Gasp T-Shirt and a complimentary Pasta Salute admission on September 13. Space is limited, therefore only the first 300 registrants can be guaranteed a spot on the boat returning to Sandwich from Provincetown , everyone else will be transported by bus.
Up to 20 individual motorcyclists or members of motorcycle clubs interested in joining in this worthy event and helping to provide affordable, supportive housing can contact Paul Hebert by calling 508-771-0885 or via email at hfac@champhouse.org. This offers a great opportunity to display the club’s colors as part of an exciting Cape Cod Community event.
CHAMP Homes’ Director Paul Hebert hopes that there will be a significant increase in the number of individuals who’d like to participate in this event by competing in raising the most funds. Charities and churches from across the Cape are invited to raise funds for their own mission by participating as an ally under the Champ Homes banner without the cost or responsibility. A small percentage of the funds they raise is shared with Champ Homes, so many good organizations can benefit from the alliance.
More information about CHAMP Homes, the Last Gasp or pledge forms can be obtained by calling (508) 771-0885 or through an email to hfac@champhouse.org.

Cape Cod and Islands Red Cross Sends Volunteers to Midwest for Floor Relief Assistance
The Cape Cod and the Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross has now deployed three of its experienced volunteer Disaster Action Team members to provide support for the flood relief efforts in the Midwest. The American Red Cross has called for volunteers nationwide to assist in the relief efforts related to the devastating flooding of the Mississippi river.
The dedicated volunteers are: Bob Leiden, from South Chatham, was deployed to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is a retired computer engineer and has previously been deployed to help with the relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina, the New Hampshire Floods, Tropical Storm Chris, and the California Wildfires last fall.
Ted Smith, from Dennisport, was sent to help with the relief efforts in Iowa. He is retired. He has volunteered in several other relief efforts including the Central Maine Floods in April 2008, the California Wildfires, the Massachusetts floods of 2006, the 2003 Maryland Floods, and the Ice Storms in New York in 2003.
Bob Lancaster, from Cotuit, was sent to help with the relief efforts in Indiana. He is a retired geologist and was previously deployed last year to provide assistance during the California Wildfires. His dedication is demonstrated by the fact that he missed Father’s Day to report to Indiana.
This flood is the most severe of its kind in 15 years. The Red Cross estimates that it will have to spend more than $30 million to keep providing assistance. The blood banks are also being depleted. Any donation of money or blood to the American Red Cross would be greatly appreciated at this time.
The Safe and Well web site is available for displaced persons to update families on their well-being and current location. The Safe and Well site is accessible from www.redcross.org.
All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disaster. Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. Against the Tide Sixteenth Annual Metro Boston

Ninth Annual Cape Cod
7:30a.m.- 12:00 p.m.
Sat.,, Aug., 16
Nickerson State Park Brewster, MA
“Against The Tide” is a one-mile swim, two-mile kayak and three-mile fitness walk to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC). This fun and inspirational statewide program brings swimmers, kayakers and walkers of all ages and abilities together with MBCC in efforts to stop the breast cancer epidemic.
Participants from all over New England commit to raising a minimum contribution of $150, which must be donated on the day of the event, in order to participate in the festivities. Partici
-pants may enroll in one or as many events as they would like. All funds raised go directly to breast cancer prevention through the advocacy work of MBCC and research initiatives of its sister environmental organization, Silent Spring Institute. Registr
-ation materials, sponsor information, and fundraising ideas can be found at www.mbcc.org/swim.
“Against the Tide is not a big, corporate show, but an event that celebrates families and individuals of all ages and abilities coming together to truly end this epidemic,” says Executive Director Deborah Shields; “It is empowering and uplifting to know that we are contributing towards a healthier future; one in which our mothers, daughters, and friends will not have to fear that they will be the one in seven diagnosed with breast cancer.”
Breast cancer now strikes more women in the world than any other type of cancer. In the past 50 years, the lifetime risk of breast cancer has nearly tripled in theUnited States. In the 1940’s, a woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer was 1 in 22. In the year 2002, the risk was 1 in 8 and is presently 1 in 7. The increasing prevalence reinforces the necessity to reverse the trend and prevent breast cancer from occurring in the first place.
The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition is a nonprofit organization committed to stopping the breast cancer epidemic in Massachusetts through activism, advocacy, research and education. Founded in 1991, the focus of MBCC is to find the causes of breast cancer and seek real prevention against this devastating disease.

Are You Aware of a Growing Network of Angels on Cape Cod?

We are simply neighbors helping neighbors. This is not about money. This is about the values that our parents and grandparents lived everyday. We have existing communities in Mashpee, Falmouth, Sandwich, Barnstable, Yarmouth and Wellfleet. We are off Cape as well in Sudbury, Wayland, Northborough, Bolton, Pembroke, Wareham, Concord-Carlisle and Medway with more town joining everyday. Allow me to tell you a bit of what we do
The Angels have been making a difference in the lives of people in their own towns for years. We are men, women and students of all ages. We help our neighbors in time of short term emergencies in their lives (regardless of age) with hot meals for weeks at a time when they are unable to handle the task, rides to doctors appts. rides to the grocery store, an occasional get well card, a phone call to someone just out of the hospital. We have assisted the American Red Cross holding a blood drive to support a child dealing with cancer. We help people coping with the complications of cancer to people adjusting to needs after a less complicated surgery. We have a handicapped woman who lost her son in Iraq who needs rides to a support group to help her cope with this tragedy. Transportation is also available for a blind gentleman wishing to visit his wife in a Rehab facility for six weeks removing an amazing amount of stress from this man’s life.
All contact is done thru email. When a need arises, the volunteer gets an email with a general description of the need. If they have the opportunity to help out, they check the password-protected website (which has also been donated) for specific details. If they can, they volunteer. If they can’t, maybe another time. No one is calling you just as you step in your door from work asking you to do one more thing. You volunteer ONLY when it works for you.
If this volunteer group sounds like something you might be interested in, please contact Susan Grayson-Johnson at "capecodangels@verizon.net" for more information. We need someone who would be interested in being a Coordinator (or Dual Coordinators) for each town as well as many volunteers. All training is provided to be a Coordinator via email or phone calls and once the system is up and running your weekly time commitment is no more than about 30 minutes or so. We do ask that a Coordinator be available to check emails regularly.
Please consider being the difference that we all so desperately want to see in this world. Start here. Start now. Start in your own home town.
