Windmill Gift Shop Ay The Aptucxet Trading Post Museum Opens For The Season

The Windmill Gift Shopat the Aptucxet Trading Post Museum is now open for the 2008 season. Located on Aptucxet Road (off Shore Road in Bourne Village), the Windmill offers an intriguing selection of items for both visitors and residents. The book department features a wide selection of books by local authors and books about Bourne, Cape Cod, Native Americans and Pilgrims. Other items include wampum jewelry, videos, windchimes, children's items including games and stuffed toys, baskets, clothing, Pierpoint glass, tote bags, cards, chocolate covered cranberries, and many other items to suit any budget.
A visit to the Windmill also includes a bit of history. In the 19th century famed actor Joseph Jefferson, renowned for his stage portrayal of Rip Van Winkle, had a summer home at Crow's Nest on Buttermilk Bay in the Town of Bourne. One of the buildings at his complex was a Dutch-style windmill that he used as an art studio. When the Jefferson windmill faced an uncertain fate in the 1970s the Bourne Historical Society stepped in and had it moved to the Aptucxet site where it has found a new life as a gift shop.
Windmill Gift Shop hours are Tues., through Sat., 10-4 and Sun., 2-5 for the season, through Columbus Day Weekend. The telephone number for the Windmill is 508-759-1479. More info at http://www.bournehistoricalsoc.org.
